Abstract: The detection and correct interpretation of biosignatures in extrasolar planets is emerging as one of the most compelling goals of modern astrophysics and astrobiology. This goal motivates the work of thousands of scientists and engineers worldwide and is supported by major investments from governments and science philanthropy. With exciting and rapid progress in exoplanet discovery, characterization, theory, and enabling technologies, the future of this field has never been brighter. At the same time, the potential complexity of habitable planets and their systems may be vast, while the quality and quantity of obtainable data will be limited. It is important that, as we formulate some of humanity’s most inspiring scientific experiments, we do so with a thorough understanding of the challenges against which these experiments must be robust. In this talk, I will review five key challenges in biosignature detection and interpretation in the context of the exciting opportunities provided by upcoming and future observational capabilities. Finally, I will address potential pathways toward overcoming these challenges.
