Guest edited by Dr. Scott M. Perl (LA-NHM) and Dr. Mary Beth Wilhelm (NASA Ames) To mark the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Viking landings, the journal Astrobiology has published a dedicated special collection revisiting the mission that first and last attempted to directly measure cellular life on another world and the five decades of debate, technology, and discovery it set in motion.

Running nearly 200 pages, the collection spans 17 articles across three sections: the historical record of Viking itself, the pivot from Viking toward modern astrobiology, and the mission concepts and technologies Viking’s legacy continues to shape. Every article below is freely readable now.
The collection was two years in the making. In announcing its publication, co-guest editors Scott Perl (LA-NHM) and Mary Beth Wilhelm (NASA Ames) described it as a labor of love built across countless nights and weekends, with essential support from science communicator Aaron McKinnon and Astrobiology Editor-in-Chief Sherry Cady.
The editors have said they hope the collection does more than commemorate an anniversary – that it reinvigorates the community’s thinking about how future missions should search for life, informed by everything learned in the five decades since Viking’s landers first touched down.
The collection has a fitting contribution: Ann Druyan’s perspectives on how Viking reshaped science communication and helped inspire Carl Sagan’s Cosmos by reflecting that humanity’s capacity to rise to hard challenges is real, but that the spark science provides only stays lit if its findings are shared rather than kept to a few.
It’s a sentiment the editors returned to in describing why they built this collection: not just to look back at Viking, but to pass that “candle in the darkness” to the next generation of astrobiologists while asking the necessary questions now for the future.
Viking 50th Anniversary at Ames: “America’s first landing on Mars transformed planetary exploration and helped define the scientific field we now call astrobiology. Fifty years later, NASA Ames celebrates Viking’s enduring legacy and its continuing influence on the search for life beyond Earth.”
