PREFACE

His book is a natural extension of the work in the field | of the problem of the origin of life which I have been carrying on for many years. Until quite recently this problem and the problem of the essential nature of life were regarded as two independent problems. The first was almost entirely ignored by scientific research workers, while the concept of the essential nature of life was treated purely metaphysically, completely divorced from its origin.

Nowadays scientists are coming to realise more and more that these two problems are really one, that the nature of life and its origin and development can only be studied in the light of their indissoluble association.

This book is an attempt to approach the problem of the essential nature of life from such an angle.

I wish to express my deep gratitude to Candidate N. S. Gel’man for the help she has given me in my work on this book.
