There Is A Symbol Of Earth Medicine On Mars

Editor’s note: In releasing this image NASA said “This photo was selected by public vote and featured as “Image of the Week” for Week 228 (June 22 – 28, 2025) of the Perseverance rover mission on Mars. The choice of the caduceus on this plaque is a tribute to the medical community and their perseverance during the pandemic.”

The caption by NASA is incorrect. This symbol actually depicts “The Rod of Asclepius“ – a staff or rod with a snake wrapped around it. This has been recognized as a symbol of medicine and healing for thousands of years. It’s associated with the Greek god Asclepius, known for his healing powers. This symbol is widely used by healthcare organizations and professional associations. The small globe was added atop the rod by NASA.

A caduceus shows two snakes and wings top a staff. During the American civil war, an army officer mistakenly adopted it as the symbol for the U.S. Army Medical Corps linking it to the printing of medical textbooks instead of the Rod of Asclepius which would have been the appropriate symbol to use. Prior to this mistake caduceus was not associated with medicine. Medical professionals often limit their use of the symbol and use the Rod of Asclepius instead.

A 3-by-5-inch (8-by-13-centimeters) commemorative aluminum plate was installed on the left side of the Perseverance rover’s chassis. The plate pays tribute to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the perseverance of healthcare workers around the world. (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech)
