Marking the 20th anniversary of the Stardust sample return\, the workshop will highlight two decades of advances in cometary sample science while integrating new insights from space and ground-based observations across optical\, infrared\, and radio wavelengths\, including facilities such as JWST\, Hubble\, and major ground-based observatories. By connecting laboratory analyses\, multi-wavelength remote sensing\, and mission science\, the workshop aims to develop a cohesive understanding of cometary materials and their role in Solar System formation\, and to define key science priorities for future comet exploration and sample return missions.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Planetary Protection
DESCRIPTION:This course provides an overview of international policies\, standards and methodologies used to implement planetary protection measures in space missions. It includes discussions on compliance to UN Outer Space Treaty requiring space explorations to avoid harmful contamination of celestial bodies (including the Moon) and adverse changes in the environment of Earth (as a result of introduction of extra-terrestrial matter). Emphasis will be put on both theoretical\, management and practical aspects of planetary protection\, with hands-on laboratory training in microbial sampling and cleanroom activities. The course is taught by international experts in the field of planetary protection\, with knowledge across multiple disciplines\, as well as direct involvement in state-of-the-art astrobiology missions.

SUMMARY:Mars and the Earthlings: Can we\, and should we\, go to Mars?
DESCRIPTION:This training school stemmed from the European Astrobiology Institute’s Project Team “Mars and the Earthlings”\, whose goal is to provide reliable information and foster healthy\, evidence-based discussions on human Mars exploration. This project team gathers space exploration experts including astronauts\, astronomers\, planetary scientists\, geologists\, legal experts\, biologists\, philosophers and economists. The lectures will be given by some of them. The learning contents draw largely from the book « Mars and the Earthlings: A Realistic View on Mars Exploration and Settlement »\, written by Project Team members and published in January 2025 by Springer. Among the topics to be covered are the Martian geology and climate\, robotic missions to Mars\, crewed orbital flight\, permanent settlements on Mars\, and terraforming. On top of technical and scientific challenges\, each topic will be looked at from economic\, legal\, societal\, psychological\, and medical perspectives.

SUMMARY:Where Skies Meet: Multidisciplinary Views of Planet and Exoplanet Atmospheres
DESCRIPTION:The IAA-CSIC Severo Ochoa Advanced School “Where skies meet: multidisciplinary views of planet and exoplanet atmospheres” is designed for researchers interested in the study of planetary atmospheres both in the Solar System and in exoplanets\, aiming to bridge the two communities. The school will provide an up-to-date perspective on the latest developments in the study of Solar System atmospheres and in the emerging field of exoplanetary atmospheres\, reflecting the rapid evolution of planetary science. While researchers at all career stages are welcome\, preference will be given to early-stage researchers (PhD researchers and early postdocs).The topics covered by the school include planetary formation\, planetary interior and its link with the atmosphere\, atmospheric modeling\, observational techniques\, radiative transfer and retrieval schemes\, as well as 1-day Workshop on potential Venus-analogue exoplanets. In addition to topical lectures going beyond textbook knowledge\, the school will also schedule hands-on sessions focused on the practical use of  state-of-the-art tools in the field given by their developers\, promoting interaction between lecturers and participants. Given the strongly interactive nature of the school\, only in-person attendance will be possible.

SUMMARY:Community Workshop: The Mission to Enceladus - The ESA L4 Mission
DESCRIPTION:The community workshop at ESTEC focused on “The Mission to Enceladus – The ESA L4 Mission” will be held at ESTEC December 8-10\, 2026. \nThe workshop will have a dual focus. Firstly\, ESA will provide the community with updates on the study results conducted with the support of the L4 Expert Committee\, the L4 Payload Working Group and industrial partners. Secondly\, the community will have the opportunity to present their concepts and ideas for L4 payloads. \nThis workshop marks our transition into the next phase of the L4 preparation. \nGiven the long timeline of the mission with a landing on Enceladus in the second half of the 2050s we encourage the active participation of scientists in early career stages. A limited number of travel bursaries of 500 Euro each will be available for students and PhD candidates who will present at the workshop. \nTo apply for this\, first register for the workshop and then click ‘Yes’ to the Student travel bursary question on the abstract submission form. \nRegistration and abstract submission close on 13 September 2026 at midnight. \nGiven the strong interest we expect\, it may only be possible to confirm in-person participation by the end of September. The workshop will be fully hybrid\, so online participation will be available in all cases. \nOne aspect that is particularly important to us is engaging the next generation of researchers. With an Enceladus landing envisioned for the second half of the 2050s\, many of today’s early-career scientists will be the ones leading the science when we arrive. We therefore strongly encourage participation from students and early-career researchers. \nTo support this\, a limited number of €500 travel bursaries from ESA Space Science will be available for students and PhD candidates presenting at the workshop. Topics covered are the Milky Way as a galaxy\, stars and planets\, and Active Galactic Nuclei in the context of reference frames. MWGaiaDN projects also look towards the future\, by researching the challenges of sub-microarcsecond astrometry and investigating the technical challenges that will have to be overcome to realize the potential follow-up mission to Gaia\, GaiaNIR \nThe timing of this conference\, just after the release of Gaia DR4\, allows for a look back at the science results achieved with Gaia DR3 and to look ahead at the grand challenges that Gaia DR4 and DR5 offer that the scientific community can address through collaborative projects. \nLooking further ahead\, the next step will be to map the regions of the Milky Way and the universe inaccessible by Gaia\, which requires a deeper survey able to penetrate the dust to unveil the hidden regions. Future astrometry missions in the infrared will be discussed\, with JASMINE mapping the Milky Way’s nuclear region and GaiaNIR vastly expanding Gaia’s census of the Milky Way to a dense sampling of phase space over the full extent of the Milky Way’s disk. The latest mission updates will be presented and synergies with other missions and surveys will be explored.

SUMMARY:The Galactic Journey of the Solar System: Astronomical\, Geological\, and Paleo-Climatological Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:As Earth orbits the Sun\, the Solar System itself revolves around the center of the Milky Way\, moving through a continuously changing Galactic environment. In addition to its mean orbital motion\, the Solar System has a peculiar velocity relative to the surrounding gas and stars\, causing it to traverse different regions of the interstellar medium (ISM) over time. The ISM spans a wide range of gas and dust densities\, temperatures\, and pressures\, and is continuously shaped by processes such as supernova explosions\, stellar winds and radiation\, Galactic shear\, and magnetic fields. \nEncounters with dense gas structures\, such as molecular clouds or supernova shock fronts\, may have measurable consequences for the Solar System. For instance\, an enhanced influx of interstellar dust into the Solar System and Earth’s atmosphere during such encounters could induce radionuclide anomalies in terrestrial archives. Similar signals may also be produced by nearby supernovae through an enhancement of the cosmic-ray flux. In addition\, increased extraterrestrial dust may alter Earth’s radiative balance\, and it remains a matter of debate whether this could result in detectable climatic responses. Under sufficiently high ambient gas densities\, the heliosphere itself could be compressed\, potentially exposing parts of the Solar System directly to the ISM. \nRecent advances in astronomy\, geochemistry\, and paleoclimatology underscore the timeliness of studying these processes. In astronomy\, the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission has revolutionized our view of the local Galactic environment\, enabling the identification of previously unknown large-scale gas structures and stellar associations or clusters\, as well as their relation to the Solar System’s past trajectory. In geochemistry\, improved analytical techniques and expanding datasets have revealed anomalies in radionuclide and interplanetary dust records\, some already linked to astrophysical events and others still unexplained. In paleoclimatology\, new high-resolution proxy records and Earth system model simulations of past climates are becoming available. Together\, these developments open new opportunities to explore connections between Galactic\, Solar\, and Terrestrial environments. \nThis meeting aims to characterize the past and future Galactic environments encountered by the Solar System\, investigate potential links between these environments and changes in the Earth system\, constrain the conditions under which interstellar densities and close supernovae can produce radionuclide anomalies or enhanced extraterrestrial particle fluxes\, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration across astronomy\, geology\, and paleoclimatology.
