SUMMARY:Mars and the Earthlings: Can we\, and should we\, go to Mars?
DESCRIPTION:This training school stemmed from the European Astrobiology Institute’s Project Team “Mars and the Earthlings”\, whose goal is to provide reliable information and foster healthy\, evidence-based discussions on human Mars exploration. This project team gathers space exploration experts including astronauts\, astronomers\, planetary scientists\, geologists\, legal experts\, biologists\, philosophers and economists. The lectures will be given by some of them. The learning contents draw largely from the book « Mars and the Earthlings: A Realistic View on Mars Exploration and Settlement »\, written by Project Team members and published in January 2025 by Springer. Among the topics to be covered are the Martian geology and climate\, robotic missions to Mars\, crewed orbital flight\, permanent settlements on Mars\, and terraforming. On top of technical and scientific challenges\, each topic will be looked at from economic\, legal\, societal\, psychological\, and medical perspectives.

SUMMARY:EAI seminar: "Searching for Signs of Life with ExoMars Rosalind Franklin" with Jorge Vago
DESCRIPTION:BY JORGE VAGO\, ESA – European Space Agency\nTuesday\, 13 October 2026 \nFinding signs of life elsewhere would constitute one of the most important scientific discoveries of our time. From the very beginning in 2002\, ExoMars was conceived to answer one question: Was there ever life on the red planet? All design decisions have focused and continue to center on the achievement of this scientific goal. It is particularly the case for the Rosalind Franklin rover. Putting the science team in the best condition to search for physical and chemical biosignatures has led to: \n1. The need for a 2-m depth drill.\n2. The choice of payload.\n3. The requirements for the science potential and age of the landing site.\n4. The surface exploration strategy that guides how the rover and instruments are used together to achieve the mission objectives. \nThe Rosalind Franklin Mission (RFM) is an evolution of the ExoMars 2022 mission\, in partnership with NASA. RFM is on schedule for launch in the latter part of 2028 and landing at Oxia Planum in 2030. This presentation will describe the current level of advancement of the mission. \nZoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/6631204351#success \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMyqW_sn70o

SUMMARY:2026 NASA LIFE RCN Seminar: Dr. Emil Ruff and Dr. Carolina Fernandes Moreira de Carvalho
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2026 NASA LIFE RCN Seminar Series! \nTime: October 13th\, 8AM PT / 11AM ET / 5PM CET! \nThis month’s speakers are Dr. Emil Ruff and Dr. Carolina Fernandes Moreira de Carvalho! \nHere is the Zoom link: https://lnkd.in/gq473pDB \nDr. Emil Ruff is a microbial ecologist at the University of Bremen\, Germany and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole\, MA\, focusing on microbial metabolisms and interactions that impact the carbon\, sulfur\, and oxygen cycle in aquatic ecosystems. His group is particularly interested in interactions between microbes that lead to novel community functions\, often enabling these microbes to conquer new habitats. His team mainly studies ecosystems with reduced complexity\, such as natural or laboratory enrichment cultures\, microbial blooms\, or extreme habitats. \nTitle of the talk: “Dark oxygen production: Progress with an unknown process”. \nDr. Carolina Fernandes Moreira de Carvalho is a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zürich investigating dark oxygen production (DOP) and associated oxygen isotope fractionation in both environmental and laboratory systems. She specializes in experimental design\, gas handling\, and high-precision isotope-ratio mass spectrometry to quantify O isotope fractionation during O₂ production and consumption processes. \nTitle of the talk: Towards resolving O₂ isotope effects of DOP processes: catalase and chlorite dismutase.

SUMMARY:Where Skies Meet: Multidisciplinary Views of Planet and Exoplanet Atmospheres
DESCRIPTION:The IAA-CSIC Severo Ochoa Advanced School “Where skies meet: multidisciplinary views of planet and exoplanet atmospheres” is designed for researchers interested in the study of planetary atmospheres both in the Solar System and in exoplanets\, aiming to bridge the two communities. The school will provide an up-to-date perspective on the latest developments in the study of Solar System atmospheres and in the emerging field of exoplanetary atmospheres\, reflecting the rapid evolution of planetary science. While researchers at all career stages are welcome\, preference will be given to early-stage researchers (PhD researchers and early postdocs). The topics covered by the school include planetary formation\, planetary interior and its link with the atmosphere\, atmospheric modeling\, observational techniques\, radiative transfer and retrieval schemes\, as well as 1-day Workshop on potential Venus-analogue exoplanets. In addition to topical lectures going beyond textbook knowledge\, the school will also schedule hands-on sessions focused on the practical use of  state-of-the-art tools in the field given by their developers\, promoting interaction between lecturers and participants. Given the strongly interactive nature of the school\, only in-person attendance will be possible.

SUMMARY:2026 NASA Cosmic Origins Early-Career Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration & Abstract Submission \nNASA’s Cosmic Origins Program is excited to invite you to the second Early Career Workshop\, designed to support and empower the next generation of astrophysics leaders and PIs. \nThe workshop aims to provide insights to early career scientists about the wide range of work done in the Cosmic Origins Program\, to explain and demonstrate the tools and opportunities available to them\, and to answer any questions they may have. \nThis workshop will take place virtually on October 20th-22nd from 1-4:30 pm Eastern. The three days will be focused on Science (Day 1)\, Missions (Day 2) and Careers (Day 3). \nDay 1: Participants will receive an overview of the science themes covered by Cosmic Origins and give early career scientists opportunities to share their research. \nDay 2: We will highlight the many NASA archives\, data analysis tools\, and upcoming proposal opportunities so that participants can see a clear path for themselves to get involved with NASA missions. \nDay 3: Participants will engage with speakers who have taken a variety of career paths that have led them to NASA science and mission work. \nThe abstract submission deadline is October 10th\, 2026 and acceptance notifications will be sent out mid-October. \nFollow the link here to attend. Note: meeting links are listed at the top of each day in the agenda: Additionally\, if you are not a current participant in the NASA Cosmic Pathfinders Program  you can follow the link here to join: https://discord.gg/DsDq5UX8TJ \nOn behalf of the Workshop Science Organizing Committee\, \nRon Gamble\nSwara Ravindranath\nPeter Kurczynski\nAvrajit Bandyopadhyay
