SUMMARY:James Webb Space Telescope JWEBBINAR #53: The Optical Constants Data Base And JWST
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) webinar (JWebbinar) dedicated to the Optical Constants database (OCdb) and its use in PICASO and VIRGA models to analyze and interpret JWST observations of brown dwarfs and exoplanets. This JWebbinar will be presented by Ella Sciamma-O’Brien\, Lora Jovanovic\, Sarah Moran\, and James Mang. \nThe JWebbinar is scheduled for Wednesday November 4\, 8-10 a.m. (PST) and is organized by the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). \nRegister by October 29 at: https://tinyurl.com/v497rx25 \nThe Optical Constants database (https://ocdb.smce.nasa.gov)\, developed at NASA Ames\, centralizes published optical constants of materials relevant to (exo)planetary and astrophysical environments\, making them more accessible to the community. \nThis JWebbinar will provide: \n1) a demo of the OCdb website: how to search the database content\, utilize its online tools for simple analyses\, and download data; \n2) how to use OCdb data in the PICASO (https://lnkd.in/grvYG4Gc) and VIRGA (https://lnkd.in/geWHaCnn) models to analyze and interpret JWST observations of brown dwarfs and exoplanets. \nIn this hand-on session\, there will be time for participants to ask questions\, discuss OCdb and exoplanet/brown dwarf-related topics\, and provide input on next steps for OCdb.

SUMMARY:2026 LPL Evening Lecture Series: Dr. Dante Lauretta: Bennu’s Ancient Waters: Asteroid Samples and the Chemical Origins of Life
DESCRIPTION:Nov. 4\, 2026\, 7 – 8 p.m.\nWhere Kuiper Space Sciences\, Room 308 and Zoom \nDr. Dante Lauretta\nRegents Professor\, Department of Planetary Sciences\nDirector\, Arizona Astrobiology Center\nUniversity of Arizona \nNASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission returned samples from asteroid Bennu to Earth\, giving scientists an unprecedented look at material preserved from the earliest history of the solar system. Analyses show that Bennu’s parent body was once rich in water and hosted chemical reactions that produced a remarkable diversity of minerals and organic compounds. These materials include ingredients relevant to the emergence of life\, offering new clues about how asteroids may have delivered water and prebiotic chemistry to the young Earth. This lecture will trace the journey to Bennu\, the return of its samples\, and the discoveries that are reshaping our understanding of how habitable worlds and the chemistry that led to life came to be. \nRegister for Dante Lauretta webinar. https://arizona.zoom.us/meeting/register/6eM_95sQTiqojhgF-h2yxg
